Students win in Shell STEM comp!
Ms G Davies, Teacher of Design & Technology
Huge congratulations to Aaya Fenn & Charlotte Walker as they have been recognised as the regional winners in Shell’s new schools competition – The Bright Ideas Challenge!
Students were tasked with using their Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) skills to come up with creative solutions to the energy challenges that cities will face in 2050. We received £1500 that will go towards resources to support the development of STEM across the school.
The students also received cash vouchers, plus a funded VIP London experience including Make the Future Live – a four day festival of ideas and innovation, hosted by Shell at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from July 5-8.
At the festival students will have the opportunity to explore how people use and create energy in everyday life through a series of science shows, hands-on activities, interactive exhibits and engaging careers experiences. As competition winners, they’ll present their ideas to the public at the festival, receive a science communications workshop and have the opportunity to meet maths expert and TV celebrity Rachel Riley!
What’s more, the National Champions of The Bright Ideas Challenge 2018 will be announced at Make the Future Live on Friday July 6, 2018.
Congratulations are also in order to our Y7 team; Phoenix Rising, who were selected by the judges as Talented Presenters as part of the Ones to Watch Prizes celebrating the Year of Engineering. As a Ones to Watch winner, the school has won an extra £750 to boost STEM Learning! Phoenix Rising team members include – Olivia Melvin, Pippa Nowers, Alice Etchell and Mia Luttrell.
