Students shine at County athletics championships!

Five County Champions, eight personal bests and nine finalists - what a day for BHS athletics! Head of PE, Miss McGonigle, reports.

On Saturday 9th June some of our athletes competed in the Bucks Schools County Championships at Stantonbury Stadium, Milton Keynes. All our students were outstanding competitors on the day showing that hard work really does pay off with their performances and displaying excellent sportsmanship along the way.

The Bucks Schools County Championships are where the top athletes from Buckinghamshire compete against one another to become County Champion and also aim for a place in English Schools, extremely difficult to do. The day started very well with Abby Masqueier throwing a personal best in the discus to become County Champion, followed by Tilly Crampsie and Sophia Martin throwing personal bests and Alexia Martin close to her PB in the javelin, with Tilly placing 3rd. Alexia Martin We then moved to the track where Abby Masquelier and Alexia Martin ran well in the hurdles heats to qualify for the finals, followed by Sophia Martin qualifying for a 200m final spot. Cerys Vico then ran the fastest qualifying time in the 800m to put her in pole positon going into the final. Sophia Martin then got her second PB of the day with 8.37m in the shot putt.

It was then the time for the finals starting with Sian Vico winning the 300m final running a PB of 41.9 seconds, our second County Champion of the day. Liska Nowers was then jumping extremely well in the pole vault equaling her personal best of 2.90m to become County Champion, narrowly missing out on getting a new PB as she skimmed 3m. County Champion number three for BHS. Tilly Crampsie then ran in the 1500m final, a tough quick race, and she was rewarded for sticking with the pack getting her second PB of the day with a time of 5.24 minutes. Issy Wijsman then went in the inter girls 1500m final running extremely well to finish in 2nd place in a fiercely competitive race.

Then was the turn of Alexia Martin and Abby Masquelier in the hurdles final. Alexia ran an excellent race as one of the youngest in the race and came through strongly at the end. Abby led the way with an excellent start and hurdled impeccably to take first place and become County Champion with a Championship record of 11.08 seconds. Abby has also previously run the qualifying time for English Schools of 11.06 seconds and we await confirmation of her selection for the team. Sophia Martin was then up in the 200m final, running a strong race to finish middle of the pack with a personal best of 29.2 seconds- her third PB of the day! Last but not least it was the turn of Cerys Vico in the 800m final, with one athlete taking on the race from the start and building a lead over the rest of the pack. Cerys ran a tactical race and with the last 200m looming she started to make her move and from about 20m behind the leader she managed to close her in an exciting sprint finish. Cerys took the title and became County Champion in emphatic style- the perfect finish to a great day of athletics from the Becky High students.

As ever the students were a credit to the school on and off the track and we are very proud to have them representing Beaconsfield High. Thank you to them all for their hard work and excellent performances, and to their parents for their support on the day.
